Ada turns 100
NORWOOD - Ada Plett, the oldest resident of Our Parents Home based in Norwood, celebrated her 100th birthday on 11 February with a magnificent birthday party in her honour.
Plett’s family, friends, grandchildren and great-grandchildren spent the day with her, spoiling her with gifts and endless love.
General manager of the home, Kay Govender, spoke highly of Plett and stated that she was a pleasure to have.
“Ada Plett is a delightful resident of Sunshine Circle in Our Parents Home, where she has been residing for eight years. She is still very socially active and all visitors and staff are always greeted with a friendly smile by Mrs Plett,” said Govender.
When Plett was asked how old she was, she replied with a glint in her eye, “I still have to work that out.”
She is quite adept at instructing the home’s staff and delegating what needs to be done. When Govender informed Plett that she was leaving the party, Plett jokingly replied, “Make sure you come back early in the morning.”
“All of us at OPH feel truly blessed and privileged that we could share this milestone and we wish her lots of joy and good health,” said Govender.
Plett was born in Marquard in the Free State. She matriculated at Senekal High School and relocated to Johannesburg thereafter. Plett married Norman Gross who passed away at a young age, and remarried Manny Plett. The couple moved to Bulawayo in 1957 and lived there for 20 years before moving to Port Elizabeth.
Plett was a very good tennis player and continued to play the sport into her mature years.
She is the eldest of two brothers and three sisters, four of whom have passed on, and her sister, Louise, lives in London.
