WATCH: AK-47 gunmen arrested, possibly linked to fatal hijacking

HILLBROW - Five suspects arrested in Hillbrow driving a vehicle hijacked earlier this month in which the driver was killed, were found to be in possession of an AK47, a pistol and live ammunition.

On 17 February, a white BMW was stopped by police on the corner of Catherine and Kotze streets in Hillbrow. Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo of Hillbrow police said, “Police had been patrolling the area when they stopped the BMW with five occupants.”

Upon searching the vehicle, police found the weapons and ammunition.

Zondo said, “When police tracked the number plate it came to our attention that a false number plate had been used.”

Further investigation revealed that on 8 February, it had been reported to Yeoville police that the vehicle had been hijacked and the driver killed during the incident.

Police are currently investigating whether the suspects were involved in the hijacking and murder incident.

The five suspects will appear in court soon on charges of motor vehicle theft and unlicensed firearms.
