A tribute to Matthew Martins

PARKTOWN – The late Matthew Martins is remembered by his former high school.

The memory of Matthew Martins lived on as his former high school, Parktown Boys’ hosted its 16th annual BDO Indigo U15 water polo tournament in honour of him.

Martins lost a three-year battle against leukemia at the age of 18.

“We managed to raise about R9 400 for the Sunflower Fund through the donation of a bandana per player and the selling of bandanas to supporters,” said Tracey Finn, one of the organisers of the event.

The Sunflower Fund is a non-profit organisation that is dedicated to creating awareness, educating the public and handling the registration process for people to join the South African Bone Marrow Registry.

Traditionally there are 20 schools comprising 270 boys who participate in the top quality water polo tournament. Originally the tournament was purely for schools based in Gauteng. Now it is a premier event on the national schools water polo calendar and is attended by the top water polo playing schools in the country.

The winners of the tournament were Clifton School from Durban.
