Live, work and play in Maboneng

JOBURG - Ithemba Property is creating jobs and affordable housing with a difference in the north-eastern extension of Maboneng Precinct.

City Buzz was invited to take a look at the construction taking place on the corner of Berea and Anderson streets in Maboneng, and the new building, Eyethu House (meaning ‘our house’), is taking shape to become a block of very modern affordable housing units.

“This building was a multi-storey light-industrial building – with a lot of textile tenants – which is being converted into 430 residential apartments,” said the CEO of Ithemba Property, Rian Reyneke.

The company, which is responsible for the refurbishment of more than 2 000 residential units in and around the City, has employed 160 people to work on the conversion of Eyethu House alone.

With the high cost of living in Gauteng, the company is keeping rental costs down by building each of the units using a polystyrene-like material – which also works to maintain the integrity of the building because using brick would compromise the structure.

Another method being employed by the company to keep rental costs down is to make use of the underground water springs that run below the building. The building planners intend to pipe the water to each of the units in the building.

In fact, the company is planning to go completely off the grid as they explore the use of solar-power. The rooftop level of the building will function as a braai area with a basketball court, and the remainder of the area could be used to install the solar panels.

Renting in the Maboneng area is set to be easier and cheaper than ever before, with Ithemba Property catering to all the needs of those who would like to live, work and play in the up-and-coming Maboneng Precinct.
