Jozi’s oldest grocers
ILLOVO – Find out more about one of the oldest companies in Johannesburg.
Today, Thrupps is known as a thriving shopping centre with ample parking and a number of sought-after facilities.
However, Thrupps the ‘Grocers of Distinction’ first opened their doors in 1892 and, back then, it could be found on the corner of Eloff and President streets.
It states on the store’s website that CH Thrupp & Co was opened by founder Charles Thrupp after he discovered that arriving British immigrants craved goodies from England. The store moved to Rosebank in 1947, but moved once more, along with the tide of the new South Africa, to the Thrupps Illovo Centre on Oxford Road situated between Rosebank and Sandton.
According to Joburg.org.za, Thrupps is the oldest store in Johannesburg, coming in at a whopping 110 years old. It also states that back in 1992, the store was given a clock by First National Bank due to the fact that it had had an account with the bank for a solid 100 years.
To this day, Thrupps has kept up to date with technology (you can order groceries online) and the desires of its many faithful customers. It is always fully stocked with the best in local produce and imported delicacies.
