Making a difference one fundraiser at a time
JOBURG – Home for girls hit hard by the state of the South African economy. Read up on how you can help.
Founded in 1994, Uitkoms Home for Girls is a registered child- and youth-care centre in Observatory which helps a number of girls who are victims of rape, abuse, abandonment, neglect and also some who are pregnant.
The home offers shelter, protection, professional counselling and life guidance to teenage girls from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping them reclaim their dignity and to build bright futures.
With the recent downturn in the economy, many children’s homes are in a crisis as corporate and international funding has declined.
Noma Moyo, a social worker at Uitkoms said, “The centre has been hit hard by the economic struggles over the past year.”
She continued, “Uitkoms is heavily reliant on the public at large for financial contributions to continue delivering their services and to maintain the level of equality of services provided.”
Moyo said that they are very excited about the fundraisers planned for this year and look forward to the community’s involvement.
Some of the fundraising events planned for this year by the centre include Jumble Sale Saturday on 30 April, a charity golf day on 4 May and a Women’s Day High Tea on 13 August.
“In the spirit of celebrating women during the month of August, the home will host a High Tea event at Bella Restaurant and Deli in Sandton.”
