Africa Day celebrated

VICTORY PARK – De La Salle Holy Cross College celebrates Africa Day.

It was a multi-cultural day at De La Salle Holy Cross College in Victory Park as the Junior School celebrated Africa Day on 25 May.

The pupils wore traditional outfits and accessories representing their culture and included Zulu, Sotho and Afrikaans; and others represented countries such as Nigeria, India and Malawi.

A special assembly was held on the day where pupils learned about the history of Africa Day, and some read passages from Thabo Mbeki’s I am an African speech. The prayer, God Bless Africa was narrated and was followed by the singing of the national anthem.

“It was so exciting for the children to wear their traditional outfits to school and very interesting for them to learn about different cultures. We are so proud of our diverse heritage and community,” said Carren Ilsley, deputy head of the Junior School.
