Braamfontein eery after night time protest
BRAAMFONTEIN – Businesses remain closed and areas around Wits are under heavy Metro Police patrol, following a violent protest on 14 October.
Remaining on De Korte and Jorissen streets today are the shells and rubble of the two vehicles that were set alight last night during the protest – a sight fast becoming an attraction in the city.

An onlooker present at the scene last night explained what took place during the protest-turned-riot.
Lebo Hadebe explained what took place outside The Orbit.
“It was random criminals and not students who did this. This is a media car and there were cameras, computers and laptops in the car and the criminals wanted to gain something by setting it on fire. Others came in the morning to cut wires out of it, to sell. Even the shop, Mochachos, was broken into, and outside a tow car was set on fire.”

Nine people were arrested in connection with the vandalism, two of which were Wits students and the remaining five non-Wits students.
In a statement issued by the Senior Executive Team at Wits University, the violence that broke out in Braamfontein last night was deemed unacceptable.
“Why would one destroy The Orbit where Sibongile Khumalo was performing? Why would you arbitrarily burn vehicles if you are unhappy about the fact that the academic programme is continuing? How does one enable the other,” the statement read.
Wits has confirmed that the school programme will commence as per usual on Monday.
Wayne Minnaar, the Metro Police’s spokesperson, said that they will continue to monitor the situation around the university and within Braamfontein.
