Roedean Academy recognises achievers
HOUGHTON – Academy schoolgirls were recently awarded for their good results and school achievements.
The Roedean Academy prize-giving ceremony took place on 5 November in the academy’s Founders Hall and it was filled with much celebration as the schoolgirls delighted in their own achievements as well as the achievements of their friends.
Academy director, Sandi McCallum, spoke about the academy and outlined its achievements and progress during the course of the year.
McCallum congratulated the prize winners and reminded all present of the importance of reading. Following her speech, the executive headmistress of the academy, Mary Williams, handed out certificates and book prizes to delighted recipients.
Thank-you speeches followed the prizes and this was a highlight for all the guests as the girls paid tribute to their teachers.
All in attendance were impressed by the confidence of the speakers and by the passion and eloquence of the tributes.
After the speeches, Caroline Green, a teacher from the academy, who imparted great advice to the matric girls. Following this, Agnes Nugent announced the two winners of the Realema Teaching Intern Programme. The winners were Jessica Makamba-Otto and Nonhlanhla Khumalo.

The programme is run by St Johns College and offers teaching bursaries and internships.
Brett Jury from Bidvest Bank announced the bursary for the top Roedean Academy Grade 12 schoolgirl, Mbalenhle Motseni. The bursary includes study and accommodation fees.
Following the prize-giving ceremony, the Academy schoolgirls, teachers, parents, and guests were treated to tea and snacks in the academy’s gardens.
