St Johns maths star

HOUGHTON – St John's College pupil wins big at the South African Maths Olympiad.

St John’s College has expressed great pride in a few of the boys and their stellar performances at the recent South African Maths Olympiad.

The Olympiad is the biggest in the country and saw 100 000 children taking part, with only 100 making it to the third and final round. St John’s College’s Andi Qu made his school proud by taking first place in the junior division of the competition.

Spokesperson for the school Jacqui Deeks said, “This is really an outstanding achievement and a rare occurrence for any school.”

Deeks added, “From St John’s College, Nicholas Brinkmann, Andi Qu, Alan Pullinger, Daniel Zhuo, Adam Gear, Eli Osei and Jun Tan all made it to the third round which, in itself, is an excellent achievement. ”

Nicholas Brinkmann received third place in the senior division in the Gauteng awards.

Deeks added, “A number of our boys participated in the South African Team Maths Challenge, competing with the Wits Siyanqoba teams. In a competition frequently dominated by the Western Cape teams, we were delighted that the Wits A team, which included Andi Qu and Jun Tan from St John’s College, came first overall in the country.”
