Hillbrow man arrested for attempted robbery and possession of an illegal firearm

HILLBROW – The suspect was first beaten by a mob of residents in the area before he was handed over to the police.

 

A Hillbrow informal trader narrowly escaped the wrath of a gunman who attempted to rob her while on her way home.

This incident took place on 13 November in the early hours of the morning when the trader was returning from selling her produce.

According to Hillbrow police, the incident happened on the corner of Bruce and Quartz streets around 2 am.

The spokesperson for the Hillbrow Police Station, Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo, the suspect approached his victim and took out a firearm.

“He then assaulted her with his unlicensed firearm and searched her but she had no money or any other valuables,” said Zondo.

“The residents of the apartments where this incident happened heard some screams and they reacted. They apprehended the suspect, beat him and contacted the police who then arrested him.”

The suspect is currently in hospital under police guard. Zondo said he will be charged with attempted robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The police have applauded the community for their co-operation and working together with the police in the fight against crime in the area.
