Cases are dropped in court – not by the police

JOBURG – Registered police cases are not dropped at the stations but at the court.

A 24-year-old man, who allegedly assaulted his girlfriend over the festive season, was finally arrested by the police on 8 January.

The suspect was arrested when he went to the Johannesburg Central Police Station with his victim to apparently drop the charges.

The man has been in hiding since the case was registered on 17 December, said police spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele adding that he was then arrested.

Mbele said he was arrested because this was a pending case and criminal cases are not dropped at the police stations but at the court.

“When the case was opened against him, our officers went to look for him and he was nowhere to be found and that is the reason he was arrested,” said Mbele.

“However, the case was already under investigation and the police were still looking for him. He first has to appear in court and the case will then be discussed in court.”

It is apparent that the suspect (a boyfriend) assaulted his 20-year-old girlfriend after she discovered disturbing messages on his phone.

The incident took place at Legae Flats on Lillian Ngoyi Street in the Joburg CBD while the girlfriend was visiting for the holidays.

“After discovering the messages, the girlfriend confronted him and they began arguing. He assaulted her with his fist, which caused a swollen eye,” said Mbele.

An investigation is underway and the suspect will soon appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court.
