Three suspects were arrested by the Johannesburg Flying Squad for a business robbery on 2 February in Mayfair West.
According to the spokesperson for the flying squad, Sergeant Desmond Subramoney, the suspects allegedly robbed Rhodes Café.
He said the suspects were in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and allegedly exchanged gunfire with the police.

“Warrant officer Anthony Janse van Rensburg, Constable Rudzani Kwinda, Brixton Saps and Delta Tactical Security personnel responded to the information received which led to the arrest,” said Subramoney.
“The police, with the assistance of security officers, chased the suspects on foot but the suspects opened fire, shooting at the police who then retaliated. One of the suspects was wounded and taken to a nearby hospital.”
The other two suspects were arrested and Subramoney said two unlicensed firearms – a 9mm pistol and a 9mm Parabellum with live rounds, an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes were found in their possession.

“We are not sure how many suspects were involved with these three, the investigation is still continuing,” Subramoney said.
“All the three suspects, aged 20, 21 and 33, are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon, facing charges of business robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” he concluded.
