Rosebank police continue to urge anyone with information regarding the white Toyota Corolla Verso, which was stolen from the covered upper-level parking at Rosebank Mall, to come forward with any information.
Following the incident on 17 February, spokesperson of the Rosebank Police Station, Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe said, “All theft of motor vehicles and related cases are still being investigated by the Vehicle Identification and Safeguarding (VIS) unit. We continue to urge anyone with information to contact us. Making an arrest in this regard will be a major victory for the Rosebank police against what could be a car theft syndicate.”
Rosebank Mall, responding to questions issued by the Rosebank Killarney Gazette, said the mall’s network of CCTV cameras made it possible to identify the car being visibly driven out.
“A CCTV review was conducted by our security control offices and identified Frances van der Walt’s [car theft victim’s daughter] being tailgated by another vehicle,” said Melisandy Davids, marketing manager at Rosebank Mall. “Our site manager assisted the customer to log a call with the Rosebank Police Station [after which] an officer who was on-site, escorted the customer to the police station to open a case.”
To the contrary, Theodora Drummond, the owner of the stolen car said the video footage visibly shows a white Toyota Corolla Verso tailgating another car out of the parking lot, instead.
“The camera shows where my daughter drives in with my car. It also shows the moment when she parks the car,” said Drummond. “The rest of the video shows the suspects at least tailgating someone else out – who appeared to be driving a light blue Citroen, I think.”
