UPDATE: Suspect arrested for Johann Botha’s murder in Jeppe Hostel

JEPPESTOWN – The arrested suspect has been on the run since the murder of Johann Botha took place in Maboneng Precinct.

A 31-year-old suspect who was sought for the murder of the slain Carte Blanche producer, Johann Botha and his friend Werner Josef Peherchtold, was arrested on 18 March.

The suspect was arrested at an informal settlement near the Jeppe Hostel by the Gauteng Provincial Investigating Unit.

According to the spokesperson for Jeppe Police Station, Captain Richard Munyayi, the suspect has been on the run since the incident took place in June last year.

On the day, three men and a woman apparently went to the Zebra Inn Restaurant, also known as Swazi Inn located at Albertina Sisulu Road in the Maboneng Precinct in Jeppestown.

They pretended to be customers but later they took out firearms and demanded money from the owner, Peherchtold, who told them there was no money. It is said that Botha pleaded with the suspects not to shoot them but they went ahead and shot both of them, killing them instantly.

Munyayi said the suspects proceeded to the storeroom and took two 9mm pistols and an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene.

A case of murder and business robbery was opened at Jeppe Police Station for investigations, he said. “Three suspects, two men and a woman were already in police custody following their arrests a few days after the incident,” said Munyayi.

“The woman was arrested in KwaZulu-Natal after she had fled the province. A firearm with serial numbers filed-off was recovered during the arrest.”

“The suspect who was arrested today [18 March] has been on the run since the murder took place.

“He was arrested and is currently detained. He will appear in court soon,” said Munyayi.
