Johannesburg Flying Squad police arrest woman with ATM explosive devices

JOHANNESBURG – The suspect refuses to tell the police where the explosives were destined to go.

A 26-year-old woman was arrested by the Johannesburg police for allegedly smuggling explosives into South Africa from Zimbabwe.

The incident happened on 20 July on the corner of Wolmarans and Simons streets in the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD) in the early hours of the morning.

It is still not clear where the suspect was taking the explosives to but the police said following their preliminary investigation, she is a smuggler.

Her arrest comes amid a crime intelligence-driven operation and the woman was arrested after we got a tip-off, said Hillbrow Police Station spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo. “The suspect was in a possession of 200 Carmex connector cartridges and 50 blasting cartridges mostly used to bomb ATMS.

“Through our investigation also, we suspect that she might be a supplier as well and we’ve established also that the explosives are originally from Zimbabwe.”

At the moment, Zondo said the woman refuses to tell the police where and to whom the explosives were heading.

Johannesburg Flying Squad spokesperson, Sergeant Desmond Subramoney said the suspect apparently smuggled the explosives from Zimbabwe and arrived in Johannesburg by Bus. “She allegedly supplies criminal syndicates with explosives that are commonly used to bomb ATM’S and cash-in-transit vehicles.”

The woman is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon facing a charge of possession of explosives.

Details: Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo 082 850 7974.
