St John’s take a dip

JOHANNESBURG – The boys from St John's Preparatory took part in the annual polar bear challenge.

The boys from St John’s Preparatory School braced the cold as they took part in the annual polar bear challenge on 25 July.

Spokesperson for the school Jacqui Deeks said the challenge is part of the preparatory’s Extreme Explorers Programme which challenges the boys to complete various activities that are not part of the normal school programme including hikes, kayaking, park runs and other outdoor activities.

She added, “The swim started at 6.20am just before sunrise with all swimmers having their breath taken away by the freezing cold water. Over 50 boys took part in the swim this year.”

Deeks said that the challenge gave some of the students to opportunity to swim in ‘arguably the coldest pool in Johannesburg’.

The polar bear challenge was two widths of the school pool for the junior boys and two lengths of the pool for the senior boys.
