Recognising the men and women in blue
SAXONWOLD – Tracker held their annual awards in honour of law enforcement members including those who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
The work of the police does not go unrecognised and a ceremony to honour the women and men in blue did just that.
The Tracker Awards Ceremony was established to honour law enforcement officers and units whose efforts, in the use of the tracker system, have made a significant impact on the recovery of stolen vehicles.
Emcee, Lee Ann Duka of Tracker asked members in attendance to start off by observing a moment of silence for all the fallen police heroes.
“On 2 September, we observed the police National Commemoration Day at the Union Buildings to pay tribute and say thank you to all those members who paid the ultimate price in ensuring that the people of South Africa are safe,” she said.
Tracker’s operations executive, Ronald Knott-Craig then took to the stand and reiterated Nelson Mandela’s teachings. He touched on five concepts which included hope, perseverance, serving, creating change and inspiration.
“You as police members create hope that corruption will be defeated and criminals arrested and prosecuted,” said Knott-Craig.
“With all the negativity we face, you need to display the kind of perseverance that Madiba did because it is the one that stands between anarchy or peace and stability.”
He added that police members did not have a job but rather a calling to serve the country with humility and create positive change by performing their duties without fear or favour.
Manager at Tracker, Mark Newham gave the criteria for choosing members to receive nominations and awards. “We consider the contribution in the area of vehicle crime investigation, number of recoveries, number of arrests and outstanding efforts in coordinating recovery actions.” He added that all finalists would receive a certificate acknowledging their nomination and special contribution to the fight against vehicle crime utilising Tracker’s technology.
In conclusion, the provincial head of Gauteng Emergency Services, Brigadier Sam Killian spoke on behalf of the provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General, Deliwe de Lange who advised winners not to become complacent but rather aim for greater things. “Operation Buya Mthetho is in full swing and as we strive to bring down the levels of crime, the recovery of stolen and hijacked vehicles means there is progress and criminals will continue being brought to book,” said Killian.
