After allegedly confessing to his gruesome rape and murder of a two-year-old neighbour’s child, the suspect was stoned to death by an angry mob.
This incident happened on 1 September at Ngolongolo informal settlement, east of Johannesburg next to the Denver train station in Cleveland.
A 30-year-old suspect apparently took the child from her mother to buy her sweets but never returned with the child.
After about half-an-hour of his disappearance with the child, the community launched a search and the body of the two-year-old girl was found motionless along the railway line.
Acting police spokesperson for the Johannesburg East Cluster, Captain Elliot Tshivhase said a manhunt was launched by the community.
They found the suspect and interrogated him until he allegedly confessed to the horrific rape and murder of the child, he said. “The community then took the matter into their own hands and stoned him to death.
“We’re not yet certain about what really happened there but we have opened a case of double murder and another one of a rape.”
The investigations are still continuing and Tshivhase said no arrest has been made yet.
Police urge the community not to take the law into their own hands but to rather report crime to the law enforcement authorities.
