Bobby Brown’s story hits SA’s small screen

JOBURG – BET brings legendary musician’s biopic to life.

The Bobby Brown Story, a biopic that follows the ups and downs of legendary R&B artist Bobby Brown hit South Africa’s TV screens over the weekend.

The two-part miniseries picks up from last year’s New Edition Story which was dedicated to the life and times of the music group and sees young actor Woody McClain bring Brown’s trials and tribulations to life. McClain said Brown was by his side throughout the making of the film and made sure he told the good and bad sides of his life – from his drug abuse, marriage to Whitney Houston and affair with singer Janet Jackson.

“Bobby opened his heart up for the world to see,” McClain said.

McClain added that taking up the role of Brown brought him a lot of confidence.

On the other end of the spectrum, Gabrielle Dennis stars as the late songstress Whitney Houston and said it was exciting to take on the role of the soulful singer.

“It was very exciting, big shoes to fill but I approached it with a lot of love and respect,” Dennis said.

Alex Okosi, executive vice president and managing director for Viacom International Media Networks Africa and BET International, said being able to showcase the Bobby Brown Story was not just about being able to bring international content onto local screens but also being able to experience black culture in all facets.

“It’s a very proud moment when you watch such biopics, such storytelling that gives you insight,” said Monde Twala, vice president for BET, youth and music at Viacom International Media Networks.
