Fake Metro police officer arrested

HILBBROW – The suspect appeared in court and has been remanded in custody.

 

A man in possession of a fake Metro police identification card and a toy gun was arrested by the Johannesburg police.

The man was arrested on the corner of Van der Merwe and Banket streets on 31 August.

It is understood that he was in the company of a friend when the police requested to search them but the man refused.

“Instead, the suspect produced a card that looks like that used by the Johannesburg Metro police to identify themselves,” said Hillbrow police spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo.

“Our officers then [attempted to verify] the card only to find that the card is fake. They then went ahead and searched him and recovered a toy gun in his possession.”

The suspect was immediately arrested and he was detained at the Hillbrow Police Station, added Zondo.

The other man was not arrested.

The suspect appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 3 September and has been charged with impersonating a Metro police officer.

An investigation is still underway and the suspect has been remanded in police custody until his next court date.
