Decision to demolish the Rosebank Library still pending

ROSEBANK – The City of Johannesburg is yet to make a decision on whether to demolish the current Rosebank Library and incorporate it into a new building on the site or change the library's location altogether.

A place where community members, students and learners come to read and study peacefully was put under assessment for possible demolition last year. As it turns out, the decision to demolish the Rosebank Library by the Johannesburg Property Company is still pending and outcomes are expected by December 2018.

According to City of Joburg spokesperson, Nthatisi Modingoane, the heritage, and environmental impact assessment processes are ongoing. “Discussions will be held with the City’s Community Development Department to decide on the best location for the library looking into the future.”

Modingoane added that a new library is proposed as part of the redevelopment of the site, however, this is subject to the property company obtaining the required approvals.

A previous report Library turns a new page in the Rosebank Killarney Gazette Week ending, 15 December 2017, stated the Johannesburg Property Company was managing a R8,6 billion property portfolio on behalf of the City.

“One of the options we are looking at is to incorporate a modern-day library on the existing site as part of a mixed-use development, which may also include residential and commercial use,” Fanis Sardianos, executive manager for client business operations had said.

“We have embarked on a stakeholder engagement drive where the development proposal, including the development of the linear park adjacent to the library, will be presented. The drive is expected to be completed by end September 2018,” Modingoane said.
