UPDATE: Sentencing of Parktown Boys’ former assistant water polo coach delayed again

PARKTOWN – Parents are angered that Collan Rex escaped hundreds of charges.

Update, 20 September, 11.45am

Former Parktown Boys’ High School assistant water polo coach Collan Rex was expected to be sentenced today, 20 September. However, prosecutor Advocate Arveena Persad said the report, which includes victim impact statements conducted by social workers, was still not complete. This is according to IOL.

The prosecutor also said that more probation officers might be hired in order to complete the document.

According to IOL, Rex may only learn his fate in October. He is still out on bail and will appear in court on Friday.

Former Parktown Boys’ High School assistant water polo coach Collan Rex is expected to be sentenced today, 20 September, after the original sentencing date was postponed on Monday, 17 September. The postponement was  due to a victim’s impact statement and probation officer’s report that were not yet ready.

Former Parktown Boys’ High School assistant water polo coach Collan Rex was expected to be sentenced today, 17 September. However, sentencing has now been postponed to this coming Thursday. This is due to a victim’s impact statement and probation officer’s report that are not yet ready, EWN reports.

Former Parktown Boys’ High School assistant water polo coach Collan Rex is expected to be sentenced today following his conviction last week.

Rex was found guilty on 144 charges of sexual assault and 12 common assault counts.

 

Update, 6pm, 14 September

Kim van Es, representative for the Parktown Boys’ High School Governing Body, has responded following the guilty judgement against former assistant water polo coach Collan Rex.

“We are obviously relieved that the case is over,” van Es said.

“We are pleased that justice has been served. We really hope this will assist in the healing process for the school and the families as this has been very difficult.”

Rex was found guilty on 144 charges of sexual assault and 12 common assault counts today, 14 September.

 

Earlier, 3.30pm, 14 September

Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has welcomed the guilty judgment against former Parktown Boys’ High School assistant water polo coach Collan Rex.

Rex was found guilty on 144 charges of sexual assault and 12 common assault counts according to IOL.

Lesufi said, “We are relieved that they have found a guilty verdict and we’ll pick up the pieces on all other areas that the judge felt there was no concrete evidence or the evidence was not convincing because that evidence may impact on some of the disciplinary processes that we find ourselves in.”

Earlier in his trial, Rex pleaded guilty on 144 charges of sexual assault against 12 schoolboys.

EWN reported that Rex’s legal team argued that he should be acquitted of charges, calling into account the credibility of witnesses.

Parents of the schoolchildren were reported to be angered outside the Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court because Rex had escaped hundreds of charges.
