South Africa celebrates Tito Mboweni’s appointment with smash hit

JOBURG – Mboweni’s appointment met with mixed reactions.

On 9 October, President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed former labour minister, former governor of the SA Reserve Bank and current member of the National Executive Committee of the ANC, Tito Mboweni, to the post of finance minister after accepting Nhlanhla Nene’s resignation.

Mboweni is South Africa’s fifth finance minister in less than three years and is tasked with overseeing an economy that’s recession-hit and helping President Ramaphosa’s goal to build confidence in the country’s situation.

The news of Mboweni’s appointment has been hailed by business leaders, opposed by some political parties and met with mixed reactions from the public with some insightful and slightly humorous observations taking precedents on social media.
