Suspect arrested for illegal firearm possession

JOHANNESBURG – A suspect in the possession of two unlicensed firearms and ammo was arrested by the Johannesburg Central police.

 

A 32-year-old male was nabbed by the police for the unlawful possession of two firearms and ammunition in Johannesburg CBD.

Spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station Captain Xoli Mbele said the arrest occurred on the corner of Wolmarans and Wanderers streets on 5 October at 2pm. “The police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties when they saw a suspicious male, they stopped and searched him. They recovered two unlicensed firearms with no serial number and live rounds. The suspect failed to produce a license to possess a firearm.”

Mbele added that the firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in any crimes.

An investigation is underway and the suspect made his first appearance at the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 9 October.
