28-year-old arrested after shooting at police

JOHANNESBURG – A suspect was injured and arrested after shooting at the Johannesburg Central police.

A 28-year-old male was arrested in Joburg CBD for attempted murder and the possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition on 10 November.

Spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station Captain Xoli Mbele said that the arrest was made at the corner of Plein and Claim streets at 8am when patrolling police officers heard a gunshot in the area.

He added that upon further investigation they saw the suspect carrying a firearm. “They instructed him to put down the firearm. The suspect shot at the police and they retaliated. He was shot once in the lower body.”

The suspect was taken to the nearest hospital for treatment and is under police guard. Mbele said that the firearm and live rounds were recovered. The firearm was previously reported stolen from the Johannesburg Central Police Station in June this year.

“The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if it was used in the commission of another crime.”

The investigation is underway and the suspect will appear at the Johannesburg Magistrates Court.
