A man who was caught with an unlicensed firearm in 2014 finally got his sentence in 2018. The 29-year-old Sipho Mthethwa was found guilty of possession of an unlicensed firearm and sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment. He was sentenced by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court in November.
Parkview police spokesperson, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko recounted the events. The suspect had been arrested on 21 February 2014 on the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Bompas Road, Dunkeld West. “Parkview police were patrolling the area when they noticed a man standing around and as they approached him, the suspect started running away.
“He was chased and caught, then searched and an unlicensed firearm was found in his possession. He was arrested immediately for possession of unlicensed firearm.”
She added that a case docket was allocated to Detective Sergeant Tshifhiwa Muluvhu for investigation and he managed to secure a conviction. Sibeko said, “Parkview Police Station Commander, Colonel Theledi Gopane welcomes the sentence.”
