Community members in the Johannesburg CBD helped apprehend a business robbery suspect on 5 December.
The spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central police Captain Xoli Mbele said, “It is alleged that two males entered Springbok Supermarket on the corner of Bree and Jourbet streets pretending to be customers. One suspect pointed a firearm at a cashier and security guard while his accomplice took an undisclosed amount of money.”
The security guard shouted for help and the local community caught one of the suspects and assaulted him before the police arrived.
Mbele said the money stolen from the supermarket was recovered from the injured suspect while his accomplice who was in possession of the firearm was still at large.
He added that the suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment. “While we thank the community for their effort in apprehending a suspect, we are strongly appealing to the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.”
An investigation is underway and the arrested suspect will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
