One suspect has been arrested while two of his accomplice are still on the run after they allegedly attempted to steal a car on Jorissen Street in Braamfontein.
A man apparently parked his car on the side of the road and went to deliver a parcel in one of the nearby offices, when three suspects broke into it.
Hillbrow Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo said one of the patrons who was passing by, saw the three and notified the owner.
According to Zondo, as the owner went back to the car, the suspects apparently saw him coming and took off with the car.
“They had already managed to damage the ignition and switched on the car and drove off at the time the driver [owner] was coming,” he said.
“The driver then yelled for help and, while they were driving away, the traffic lights closed for them and the patrons then approached the car. The two suspects then got out and fled while the [suspect who was driving] was apprehended and assaulted.”
Zondo said the suspect is currently in hospital and he faces a charge of car theft.
Police are still searching for the other two suspects who fled the scene and appeal to anyone with information to contact the Hillbrow Police Station on 011 488 6511.
