Two thieves crushed to death by an elevator

JEPPESTOWN – Families of the deceased visited the police station after they were notified of what had happened to their loved ones.

Police are searching for suspects who tried to steal scrap metal at the Diamond Centre building – currently being renovated – in Jeppestown.

It is believed that the suspects were trying to steal steel bars underneath the elevator of the building when it fell and crushed two of them to death, according to Captain Richard Munyayi, the spokesperson for Jeppe Police Station.

It is not clear how many people were involved in this crime. “Some of them are on the run but we have managed to identify some of them and their residential places,” said Munyayi.

“The incident apparently happened around 11 pm on Saturday night but the police were only notified the next day.

“Following the incident, one of the suspects contacted a family member of one of the deceased to notify them of what had happened. The families then came to the station and through some of the information that we gathered, we managed to identify some of them.”

The suspects are apparently from Thembisa and Soweto and no arrests have been made yet.

Munyayi added that the two security officers who were on duty that night have not reported to work since the incident and they are wanted for questioning.

Members of the public with any information that might lead to the whereabouts of the suspects are requested to contact the police.

Details: Jeppe Police Station 011 624 6039.
