Even though the interviews have been successfully completed, there have been delays regarding the placements of the new headmasters at three Johannesburg north-eastern schools.
The interviews were done by the schools governing bodies who forwarded their recommended candidates to the Gauteng Department of Education who are yet to give feedback.
As reported in ‘Headless’ institutions to get principals in North Eastern Tribune [Week ending 8 March], Northview, Highlands North Boys and Sandringham high schools have been operating for a while now without permanent headmasters, but it was expected that the new principals would start on 1 April.
On the day, Tribune contacted the schools to find out if the new principals have started, but it was not the case.
The chairperson of the school governing body (SGB) at Northview High School, Aaron Malepe, said they have submitted their preferred candidate but are still waiting for the department’s feedback.
There were more than 10 candidates who applied for the post at Northview including the current acting principal, Cecilia Papo. “We then shortlisted the number to five and the SGB recommended Papo as their preferred candidate to head their institution,” said Malepe.
“The process was done and we considered Papo based on her experience and recommended her for the job. She was supposed to have started today [1 April] but we are still waiting for the department to give us feedback.”
Chris Bosielo, the chairperson of the school governing body at Highlands North Boys’ High School, also shared the same sentiments saying the delay is with the department. “The interviewing process was successfully completed and we had six candidates initially but shortlisted to three candidates. The three names were submitted with our recommendations but we are still waiting for the department to give us a final decision.”
Sandringham High School principal Phillip du Plessis is still on leave after he was hospitalised following his accident last year.
The spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education Steven Mabona said, “The department is still finalising their processes and will respond in detail as soon as that process is complete.”
