Two suspects were arrested by the Jeppe police and one is still on the run after two women opened cases of sexual assault on 29 May.
It is alleged that the two women boarded a taxi, a white Toyota Quantum, heading to the Johannesburg CBD when they were allegedly raped.
According to the Jeppe police, a 30-year-old woman, going to work, took a taxi from Benrose to the Johannesburg CBD. Jeppe police spokesperson, Captain Richard Munyayi, alleges that the woman found five men and a woman inside the taxi.
The driver of the taxi took a wrong direction and drove towards George Goch men hostel and along the way he stopped the taxi at Vickers and Main Reef roads, where he parked on an open space, Munyayi said.
“Two of the five men got out of the taxi and walked away,” he said.
“One of the remaining suspects raped her while the other two raped the other woman who she found inside the taxi. After the suspects finished rapping the women, they gave them R24 and dropped them off under a bridge.”
The women came to the police station to open a case and the police immediately went out to look for the taxi.
Munyayi said they managed to trace it at Faraday taxi rank and the suspect (the driver) took the police to a room at George Goch, where one suspect was arrested.
He added that a second suspect was later arrested at Sandton taxi rank.
“The other suspect is still on the run and police are still looking for him,” he said.
Police are appealing to anyone who might have information to contact Jeppe police on 011 624 6021 or 10111.
