St Mary’s School in Waverley celebrates its 131st birthday

St Mary's School in Waverley celebrates its 131st birthday.

On 31 May, Johannesburg’s oldest girls’ school, St Mary’s School, Waverley, celebrated its 131st birthday.

The day’s festivities began with the school celebrating the Patronal Eucharist and the blessing of the mosaic. The mosaic depicts activities which take place in The Edge, St Mary’s cultural hub, such as art, music, drama, and dance, and the school’s sporting, cultural and spiritual life.

It was designed by Sue Heydenrych who is St Mary’s head of visual arts in collaboration with the 2018 Grade 11 visual arts girls and executed by St Mary’s old girl, Lindsay Gaydon of the Class of 1985.

On King’s right-hand side are Nina Patience (Grade 12), Nombasa Dlwati (Grade 11), Khanyisile Nawa (St Mary’s deputy head girl) and Anqi Qu (St Mary’s head girl). In front is Rida Nosarka (Grade 1). The Eucharist was followed by a picnic at which the matric girls cooked eggs and bacon. The birthday cake was cut with great ceremony and the school’s well-loved, traditional war cry Oh When the Saints was sung.
