Bonang Matheba film finally hits SA screens

JOBURG – Showing at Encounters Film Festival, film follows media personality’s pubic figure status and influence on social media.

Starring Bonang Matheba, Sebastian Tribbie and Donterio Hundon, Public Figure is an exploration of society’s increasing obsession with social media. The insightful documentation of social media use and addiction invites the viewer to question if what they see online is reality or a complete delusion.

As it closely examines the addictive tendencies caused by social media, the film follows the lives of our established Instagram influencers around the globe – beginning in New York all the way to Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver and Johannesburg.

The documentary is set to hit local screens as it premieres at the 21st Encounters South African International Documentary Festival which will be taking place until 16 June in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Throughout the film, the influencers detail how they’ve turned their lives into enterprises while voicing their personal concerns about the addiction that comes with social media fame. At the same time, clinical psychologists and counsellors inform about the short-and long-term effects of social media and real-life interaction.

The documentary Joburg screening is set to take place on Saturday, 15 June at Rosebank Nouveau and will not only see the audience reflect on their personal social media use but also question how reality is perceived.
