Businessman arrested for attempted murder

JOHANNESBURG – The businessman apparently mistook his victim for a robber.

A business owner in the Johannesburg CBD is in police custody following his arrest for shooting and wounding another man.

It is alleged that the 55-year-old businessman shot his victim on 1 July on the corner of Von Wielligh and Albert streets. He claimed that it was in self-defence.

“It is alleged that the suspect shot a 31-year-old male in the lower body with his licensed firearm,” said the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Captain Xoli Mbele.

“The suspect told the police that the victim was with his friends and they were allegedly attacking him. He claimed that he then fired a shot into the ground and it ricocheted, injuring the alleged robber.”

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance.

The suspect’s firearm was confiscated and a police investigation was underway.

Mbele said the suspect would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.

Details: Xoli Mbele 082 777 6263.
