George Goch Hostel armed robber arrested by Jeppe police

JEPPESTOWN – The victim and his colleagues managed to apprehend the injured suspect while his accomplice managed to escape.

Little did a would-be robber know that he would end up in hospital under police guard with a gunshot wound in his leg.

On July 9, two suspects allegedly approached a 50-year-old man who was working with his colleagues near George Goch Hostel in Jeppestown.

One of the robbers allegedly pointed a firearm at the victim and ordered him to give them his wallet and cellphone.

According to Jeppe police spokesperson, Captain Richard Munyayi, the victim gave them his wallet and an iPhone. “After he had handed over the items, the victim grabbed the suspect with a firearm and they fought over it.

“They both fell down and continued to tussle over the firearm. A shot went off and the suspect was hit in the right leg with the bullet protruding from the other side.”

The victim and his colleagues apprehended the injured suspect while his accomplice managed to escape.

The police were called and arrested the suspect. A firearm with 10 live rounds was also confiscated.

Munyayi said the suspect was taken to Jeppe Police Station where a case of armed robbery and attempted murder was opened against him. He was charged and taken to hospital under police guard and will appear in court as soon as he is discharged from hospital.

Munyayi added that they are still searching for the suspect who ran away.
