The City of Johannesburg Group Forensic and Investigation Service (GFIS) said 32 suspects were arrested in suspected hijacked buildings in Hillbrow after they conducted several raids in the area on 25 July.
The information was shared on their Twitter account. The tweet read, “Five suspects who were wanted for various crimes were arrested, two were arrested for being in possession of illegal substances, one suspect was arrested for selling liquor without a licence and five cases of liquor were also confiscated.”
The 32 suspects have appeared in the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court on numerous charges.
According to GFIS, 26 suspects were undocumented foreign nationals and were also arrested during the operation which was supported by the local police and the Metro police.
Further, the GFIS said about 44 hijacked buildings have been handed back to their rightful owners. “About 643 properties are confirmed as hijacked in the city.”
GFIS added that it was important to bring back law and order in the city and would continue to intensify raids at suspected hijacked buildings with the assistance of law enforcement agencies.
