Local girls’ school celebrates Mandela Day significantly

BEREA – The most important lesson that was learnt by each child was that of kindness and reaching out to others in need.

Johannesburg Girls’ Preparatory School in Berea joined the rest of the world in celebrating the annual Mandela Day on 18 July.

The day is celebrated worldwide by various organisations and individuals to mark the birthday of the former South Africa’s first democratic president, Nelson Mandela.

Rene Budd, school’s teacher and organiser of the celebratory occasion, said each learner took part in Mandela Day by contributing to different acts of service for the 67 minutes. “Hundreds of sandwiches, biscuits, heart-warming cards to those in service were lovingly made and distributed to those less fortunate than ourselves.

“Generous grocery hampers were assembled, thanks to our parents, and were sent to orphanages and shelters in the area.

“Some learners painted donated pot plants in bright colours while others planted beautiful plants into our gardens. Our older learners spent time doing shared and paired reading with our Grade Ones.”

Prefects had a heart-warming experience visiting Impilo, an orphanage, and enjoyed themselves enormously, she added.

According to Budd, the most important lesson that was learnt by each child was that of kindness and reaching out to others in need and they also learnt the most valuable lesson of paying it forward to the community.

“We would like to thank Mrs Belinda Watts and the Kirsty Watts Foundation for her generous donation of plants and paints, as well as for spending the day with us.”
