Mzansi’s exceptional street dancers to battle for a chance to perform in Paris

JOBURG – SA’s best dancers go toe-to-toe to earn their sport at the Red Bull Dance Your Style finals.

The Red Bull Dance Your Style regional qualifiers have concluded and exceptional street dancers from the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng are ready to break a leg one more time, for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent Mzansi in Paris.

This year’s finals are slated to take place on 3 August at Newtown Music Factory in Johannesburg and will see B-Boy Craig (Durban), Lee-Shane Booysen (Cape Town), Limpopo Boy (Pretoria), B-Boy Rhythm (Port Elizabeth) and Itsu’Prince (Johannesburg) plus the wild card entries go toe-to-toe.

The winner of Red Bull Dance Your Style South African final will jet off to Paris to compete on the world stage among 30 other countries who are taking part on 12 October. The winner in Paris will be crowned the global champion of Red Bull Dance Your Style 2019.

“This year’s dancers should not undermine the Red Bull Dance Your Style platform, and they should not undermine their opponents. They need to bring their ‘A-game’ regardless of where they are coming from. When they get to the stage, they should always remember that the audience is their only allies to win the competition,” said last year’s winner Teboho ‘Tebza’ Diphehlo, who will also be going to Paris with the 2019 winner.

With South Africa being known for a unique fusion of culture which has its expression in music and the arts, this year’s Red Bull Dance Your Style South African finals will be no different, as each battle will be an exchange of the diverse and different number of styles that exist in street dance, and the audience will get to see breaking, pantsula, hip-hop, popping, and other street dance styles all on one stage.

When it comes to the music that the dancers will battle to, the DJs will be spinning well-known commercial tracks for each round, randomly selecting different genres to test the dancer’s ability to perform and adapt their dance styles to the rhythm of the beat. This means that competitors will have to be ready to get down to anything from funk to pop music, rap to house, old-school classics to new, recent chart hits, and other genres of popular music.

Sustaining the novelty of the competition, the Red Bull Dance Your Style will have no professional judges in sight. Instead, the audiences will serve as the final judge. This means the dancer who shows-off the coolest and manages to wow the crowd and win their vote will be crowned the winner.
