Afrika Tikkun sports day brings together 3 000 children to showcase their achievements
ILLOVO – Children from four Afrika Tikkun centres gathered at the Wanderers Stadium in Illovo for the talent day sponsored by Total.
Thousands of children of Afrika Tikkun centres across Johannesburg converged at the Wanderers Stadium in Illovo on 20 July for a sports and cultural day sponsored by Total.
Learners from Diepsloot, Alexandra, Braamfontein and Orange Farm from the age of two to matric took part in a number of competitive activities including singing, dance, soccer, netball, poetry, speeches and more.
Total CSI manager Nyameka Mokonya said the Afrika Tikkun programme delved into the lives of disadvantaged children, giving them holistic education from cradle to career.

The primary objective of the programme is to empower young people to receive education, good health, nutrition and support to equalise the playing field for disadvantaged youth.

Afrika Tikkun CEO for services Onyi Nwaneri explained, “Today is the culmination of months of preparation aiming to recognise the obvious and innate talents in young people. We will showcase the achievements of our learners over the last six months.
“Afrika Tikkun speaks to the rainbow nation where it does not matter where you come from, we come together as one to celebrate young people and allow them to be what they want to be.”
Afrika Tikkun alumni Lindiwe Mabuya said she was introduced to the programme in her Grade 11 year. “I was introduced to the Soweto programme through a friend. It helped me with my confidence and taught me how to present myself. I am now studying law. I am in my third year. Afrika Tikkun gives kids a platform to be the best they can be and express themselves through different arts,” said Mabuya.

Matric student Sandile Mncube, who is in his sixth year as part of the programme, said Afrika Tikkun helped him by providing social and educational support and assisting him to apply for university and scholarships.
“Today means unity for us. We believe that unity is our strength,” said Mncube.
