A total of 49 suspects were arrested between 23 to 31 July following an intensive operation by the police in the Johannesburg East Cluster with relevant stakeholders.
The suspects were arrested for charges ranging from murder, rape, attempted murder, kidnapping, possession of suspected stolen goods, driving under the influence of liquor or drugs, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, selling liquor without a licence, illegal immigrants to shoplifting.
Spokesperson for the Yeoville Police Station, Captain Sifiso Mabizela said, “Some of the arrested suspects were released on bail, some paid fines and others are still in custody due to the ongoing investigations.”
Meanwhile, a taxi driver and another suspect were arrested in connection with a case of kidnapping that occurred on Wednesday, 24 July following a missing person investigation. Mabizela said the two suspects are still in custody after their case was postponed to Monday, 5 August to address verification and a possible bail application.
He also said that the Yeoville police have seen a decrease in crime in July. This is through the support from the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), Department of Home Affairs, City of Johannesburg officials, liquor board and other stakeholders.
Within the Yeoville policing precinct, five firearms were confiscated with one being licensed, 14 illegal liquor places were closed down and 21 suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor or drugs. The police also recovered three stolen vehicles and arrested two murder suspects.
The new station commander Colonel Happy Xaba, who started on Monday 15 July, commended the Yeoville police members and said that he was impressed with the members’ daily dedication and results.
The new commander has since committed himself to align with Batho Pele principles and ensure police discipline.
