Entries for Read Educational Trust’s annual Word Warrior Competition are open

BRAAMFONTEIN – Read Educational Trust's annual Word Warrior Competition encourages self-thought and creativity in young people.

The entries for this year’s Word Warrior Competition are open with the winning entrant to receive a cash prize of R1 000, and their school will be awarded with books to the value of R5 000.

In this year’s competition, the literary geniuses in-the-making are required to create a scenario in which an intrepid detective writes a letter to the main suspect or witness in a mystery of their own making.

It should be a well-written letter posting pertinent questions to the individual. Naturally, the objective is to state details of the mystery at hand, to paint a picture of the addressee’s alleged involvement in the mystery, and to entice the reader to read further.

The competition organisers urged teachers and parents to encourage their youngsters, between the ages of nine to 16, to spill those vivid imaginations onto paper.

Aligned with the United Nations International Day celebrated on Monday, 12 August under the theme, ‘transforming education,’ the Read Educational Trust’s competition is an innovative way of contributing towards the transformation in education.

The trust indicated that one aspect of transformation in education is to encourage self-thought and creativity in young people.

Last year, the Word Warrior Competition saw the introduction of the literary character, Detective WW Inkomba (which means ‘clue’ in Zulu and Xhosa). Entrants were encouraged to write a short story around this colourful individual, and they rose to the challenge.

Entries can be sent via email or via post to PO Box 30994, Braamfontein, 2017, on or before 31 October 2019.
