Johannesburg Flying Squad unit foil carjacking in Alexandra

ALEXANDRA – Police also recovered two unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The Johannesburg Flying Squad managed to arrest two carjackers in Alexandra last weekend.

According to the unit’s spokesperson, senior personnel officer Raymond Sambo, the officers were on their way to work when they happened to pounce on a hijacking incident in progress on the corner of London Road and Linen Street in Alexandra.

Both suspects were immediately arrested.

Sambo said the officers witnessed a hijacking in progress of a geen VW Polo and when they intervened, they immediately came under fire and they retaliated.

“One suspect was shot and suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the nearby hospital for medical care and he was placed under police guard. Another suspect was detained at Alexandra SAPS.”

The officers also recovered two unlicensed firearms, a 9mm Z88 and 9mm Walther with ammunition.

The suspects are expected to appear soon at unnamed magistrates’ courts.

According to Sambo, the two suspects are part of 11 suspects arrested by the Johannesburg Flying Squad between 4 and 7 October in different parts of Johannesburg for various crimes including drunken driving, possession of stolen vehicles and drugs and attempted murder.

“We also recovered stolen and hijacked cars and other unlicensed firearms with ammunition,” Sambo added.

Investigations continue in all the cases.
