Man arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition

JOBURG CENTRAL – The police were conducting a routine crime prevention duty when they saw a suspicious male carrying a bag.

Gauteng police have arrested a 24-year-old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at the corner of Mikkel and Nugget streets, Johannesburg central on 4 November.

The arrest occurred at about 1pm. Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said the police were on a routine crime prevention patrol when they saw a suspicious man carrying a bag. They searched him and recovered an unlicensed firearm with live rounds. The suspect failed to produce a licence to possess a firearm.

Masondo added that the firearm would be sent for ballistic testing to determine if it was used in the commission of serious and violent crimes.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.

Johannesburg District Commander, Major General Masha commended the police for removing a firearm from wrongful hands.
