More than 300 undocumented foreign nationals arrested in a Hillbrow building

JOBURG CBD– Gauteng Police with Police Minister Bheki Cele kicked off the provincial safer festive campaign in Joubert Park, Joburg CBD.

Police Minister Bheki Cele, Deputy Minister of Police  Cassel Mathale, Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela and Metro Police head Chief David Tembe launched Gauteng safer festive operations on 8 November.

Their operations were in full swing as the first activation led to the arrest of 380 undocumented foreign nationals in a 21-storey building in Hillbrow. Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said, “Three suspects, two women and a man, were arrested for hijacking the building after police were able to locate the rightful owner.”

Peters said of the 380 arrested, 353 were men and 27 were women.

During the launch of the safer festive season campaign, Cele delivered the keynote address to more than 2 000 guests in Joubert Park in the Johannesburg CBD.

The campaign saw roadblocks set up at strategic points in all the five districts in the province. Unroadworthy vehicles were impounded and fines issued for contravention of road traffic regulations.

Peters added that their operation led to the confiscation of counterfeit goods to the estimated value of R25 million at Lotto building on Rahima Moosa Street. “Police also found in the building and seized equipment such as stencils and plates suspected of being utilised to produce counterfeit luxury and sports brand labels.”

Members of the public have been encouraged to use the newly launched MySAPS app to provide tip-offs anonymously and/or at their nearest police station.
