Newborn found inside abandoned bag in Weinberg Park, Waverly

WAVERLY – Police have appealed to community members with information to come forward after a child was found in a bag.


The Norwood police have opened a case of child neglect after a newborn baby was found abandoned in Weinberg Park, Hastings Avenue at about 11pm on 31 January.

Norwood Police Station spokesperson Seargent Eric Masotsha said paramedics were called to the scene after the baby was found in a bag.

“At around 11pm on 31 January, a baby was found in a black bag at Weinberg Park, Hastings Avenue in Waverley. The child was alive and the paramedics were called and they estimated the child to be one to two weeks old. The child was taken to Linksfield Clinic for medical attention and a docket of child neglect was opened,” he said.

“We are appealing to the members of the public with information that can lead to the arrest of the person responsible for this crime to come forward. We also call upon all parents encountering difficulties to raise their kids not to hesitate to contact their nearest police stations because we have well-trained members who are able to assist with social issues.”
