The year 2020 is set to be an exciting year in the world of sports. What can fans look forward to?

2019 will go down as one of the greatest sport years in South Africa’s history. Our national rugby team the Bokke travelled to Japan to play in the Rugby World Cup. The Bokke brought home the Webb Ellis cup and with it the title of the best rugby team in the world. Bafanan Bafana went through to the quarter finals of the Africa Cup of Nations and went beyond the expectations of most South Africans. Our national woman’s football team Banyana Banyana played in their first ever Woman’s Football World Cup in France.

There are a host of amazing sports events happening around the world in 2020. Here is a list of some of the most exciting events taking place.

The 2020 Rugby Championship will kick off on the 8th of August with the last match being played on the 27th of September.  The tournament is between South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Argentina. Last year the Bokke won the tournament for the fourth time and will this year be under the guidance of the new coach Jacques Nienaber who took over from Rassie Erasmus.

The men’s T20 World Cup will be hosted by Australia later this year from the 18th October to the 15th of November.  16 teams will be competing in this year’s T20 Cricket World Cup with the Proteas being one of the teams. The Proteas just won the One Day International under the new Captain Quinton de Kock. The Proteas will travel to India and the West Indies in preparation for the tournament.

One of the biggest sports events taking place in 2020 must be the Summer Olympics. The Summer Olympics will be held in Tokyo in Japan. How many gold medals will South Africa win at this year’s Olympics, will Caster and Wayde win another gold medal? Will this be the year that Chad le Clos wins his first gold medal at the Olympics? The opening ceremony will take place on the 24th of July and will come to a close with the final ceremony taking place on the 9th of August. The main stadium for the Olympics will be the New National Stadium and there are over 11 thousand athletes expected.
