Rugheimer welcomes Johannesburg Water’s commitment to upgrade water infrastructure in Ward 81

LOMBARDY EAST – its long time coming…

Johannesburg north-eastern councillor Irene Rugheimer has confirmed that the much-awaited water reticulation project in Ward 81 was now in the pipeline.

Rugheimer said the project, which was demanded by residents last year after they submitted a petition to the City of Johannesburg, had now been given the go-ahead by Johannesburg Water.

She added that the date of the commencement of the project had not yet been announced but was hopeful that it would be soon.

According to the councillor, this project will see old infrastructure replaced to curb the instances of burst pipes in the area including Lombardy East, Kew, Lombardy West and Bramley View.

“We signed a petition in 2018 and submitted to the City of Johannesburg as this was serious and continues to be a serious problem in our communities,” Rugheimer said.

“The issue was first raised in the IDP [Independent Development Planning] meeting where residents made a request to the City to assist with the infrastructure. Due to lack of response, a petition was [signed] and it was then submitted to the City.”

She added that the issue had been prioritised and she was confident it would happen soon.

“It’s been a long time coming… it means the City needs to adjust the budget for this project because this infrastructure is very old and dates as far back as the 1970s.”

Rugheimer said she had informed residents of the project via email, WhatsApp groups and Facebook since it was now impossible to have a public meeting due to the coronavirus.
