Mother arrested after allegedly throwing stillborn from first floor of Joburg building

JOBURG – The suspect has been charged with concealment of birth after giving birth to a stillborn baby.

A 19-year-old college student has been arrested for concealment of birth at an accommodation apartment at the corner of De Villiers Street and Loveday Street this morning, 17 March.

The charge of concealment of birth means the hiding of a dead body of a child after their birth in order to conceal the fact that they were born.

Johannesburg Central police responded to a call from the community who found a stillborn boy baby on the ground floor of the accommodation. Spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele said, “It is alleged that the child was thrown by his mother from the first floor. Paramedics certified him dead on the scene. The suspect was traced and apprehended.”

Mbele explained that people were aware of the suspect’s pregnancy. She did not go to a hospital or try to find help after giving birth to a stillborn.

The suspect will appear at the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court. Police are still investigating.
