Well, young locals from Craighall took matters into their own hands by selling sweet treats to help keep dogs warm this winter.
If you know the ‘rainbow house’ on Rutland Avenue in Craighall, then you know this family is all about bringing cheer to the community. With never a dull moment, a few young Craighall residents started a cute lemonade stand selling the sweet drink, cookies and brownies, all in aid of the Johannesburg (Booysens) SPCA on 19 June. If you were lucky enough to be in the area, you could have enjoyed one of those treats for only R5 each.
Mom to some of these young philanthropists, Elke Bantz, said, “We are firm believers in ‘you reap what you sow’, and we want to teach our children from an early age the necessity of giving back to the community and those less fortunate than us as we believe that this instills humility and a sense of responsibility and commitment.”
As a collective, the children said they wanted to do something for animals in need, so they decided to make sweet treats to sell to residents walking their dogs in the area.
In total, they managed to buy 30 blankets and used the rest of the proceeds to purchase dog and cat food.
Don’t think they will stop now as their next little pop-up stand will take place at Blue Bridge in Delta Park on 4 July. This time they will raise funds for Project Poncho which aims to provide vulnerable children with a warm fleece poncho that can be worn during the day and used as a blanket at night.
“We want to thank the community for their generous support and look forward to the next event,” said the children.
